EDITORIAL NOTES
Beatle sales
By the end of the first week in August, UK sales of the "Sgt. Pepper" LP had topped 500,000, and a similar figure was at hand for the single, All you need is love.
Total world sales of The Beatles is now calculated at over 200 million singles (one LP =6 single, one EP = 2 singles).
Chopin's Mazurka
Further to SP's remarks on page 140 of the August issue a very prompt reply has come from RCA Victor in New York confirming that the error has now been corrected and that all new pressings will contain the missing bars.
News from Decca
The Decca Record Co. recently gave a luncheon in Salzburg to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the VPO. The guests were welcomed by Mr James Gray, a director of the Company, and after a few words of congratulation to the orchestra he presented a diamond-studded golden record to Walter Barylli, the President of the Orchestra. Decca were also in the news at the time of the sonic booms over London-a Kingsway Hall session, with Joan Sutherland recording Daughter of the Regiment, was interrupted at an estimated cost of k100. A 'happening' of Decca's doing is the announcement that with effect from October 1st all 10-inch records will be deleted from their catalogue. The step is a logical one when one accepts that the 10-inch LP has been virtually rejected by the record buying public.
News from EMI
In connection with this month's release of Madama Butterfly, Sir John Barbirolli and Kinloch Anderson will be making two public appearances to introduce excerpts from the recording. The first one is in Manchester on October 3rd at 7.30 p.m. in the Lesser Free Trade Hall, and the second one in London at the Royal Academy of Music (Duke's Hall) on October 5th, again at 7.30 p.m. Write for free admission tickets to EMI Records, 20 Manchester Square, London, W1 (or 'phone 01-486 4488, extn. 275).
Everest to Transatlantic
UK rights to the American Everest catalogue are now vested with Transatlantic Records. An initial release of 16 LPs is due at the beginning of this month. The records will be pressed in stereo only and will be priced at 21s. 6d. inclusive of PT. Much of the material has been available in this country before, originally in mono on the Top Rank label and more recently in both mono and stereo on the World Record Club label.
