I read the letter of Mr Tosta concerning cuts in the recent Philips recording of La juive, published in your February issue (page 1431) with obvious interest, and feel a few comments are in order.

Nobody appears to have said very much about the fact that John Tavener had three works premièred in 1989. Here, surely, is a case for a CD of contemporary music which appeals to diverse tastes and could become part of a musical renaissance in the Russian Orthodox Church.

Contemporary music
Despite the encouragement for contemporary music expressed in the editorial of the January edition (page 1286) I feel that t,he musical public and the record companies sometimes have good reason to be less than enthusiastic about certain contemporary music.
The Gramophone Archive has been created using a process called Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
Optical Character Recognition allows a computer to 'read' scanned versions of original magazine pages.
