Pacific Jazz t CD CDP7 89281-2 (55 minutes: AAD).
This is an absurd title for a selection of 1956-57 Pacific Jazz recordings, some previously issued only on samplers or in other hard-to-find places: excellent jazz of its kind, but lacking the stature of, say, "Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section" or "Blues for the Fisherman" with Milcho Leviev. However, Pepper's reputation has done nothing but rise since his death II years ago, and it will not only be collectors who welcome the reinstatement of this material, with its characteristic virtues of quicksilver invention at up tempos (Straight Life) and an ascetic lyricism in the ballads Body and Soul and Patricia or the captivating duet with bass in Blues in.
