From Birmingham to Berlin

Sir Simon Rattle is one of today’s greatest conductors. He made his name in two decades at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, during which time he put classical music at the centre of the city’s cultural life and guided the orchestra’s move to the state-of-the-art Symphony Hall.

Having now renewed his contract at the Berlin Philharmonic, where he took over from Claudio Abbado in 2002, Rattle continues to nurture the future of classical music. His concerts have featured dozens of world premieres, including a Siegfried Matthus piece this year that featured him in a dual role as conductor and solo timpanist. A staunch champion of El Sistema and youth orchestras in general, Rattle has also overseen the Berlin Philharmonic’s move onto the internet, through its revolutionary ‘Digital Concert Hall’. A highly-rated discography features the symphonies of Beethoven, Mahler, Sibelius, and Brahms (to be released this September).
